Chapter 1

Every digit in a number has a place value.

In the number 5,472 each number holds a value:

The number 48 for example is broken apart into 40 + 8 = 48. The number 51 is made from 50 + 1 = 51. So when we add 48 + 51= I can mentally add 40 + 50 = 90 and 8 + 1 = 9 and 90+9=99.

48 + 51 = 99

When we know the tens and ones we can do quick mental math.

Bar Modeling

We can use bars and pictures to help us with our addition and subtraction problems.

Shari has 13 dogs. She buys 12 more. How many dogs does have now?

**Place value**Every digit in a number has a place value.

In the number 5,472 each number holds a value:

- the 2 is worth 2 ones.
- the 7 is worth 7 tens or 70.
- the 4 is worth 4 hundreds or 400.
- the 5 is worth 5 thousands or 5,000

**Mental Math and Rounding/Estimation****Number bonds**: We use number bonds to break apart a number to show the tens and ones.The number 48 for example is broken apart into 40 + 8 = 48. The number 51 is made from 50 + 1 = 51. So when we add 48 + 51= I can mentally add 40 + 50 = 90 and 8 + 1 = 9 and 90+9=99.

48 + 51 = 99

When we know the tens and ones we can do quick mental math.

**Round**: to move a number to the nearest 10's or nearest 100's number to do quick mental math.**Estimation**: To make a smart guess about a math problem. We can round numbers first and then estimate the final answer.**Front End Estimation**: Using the value of the first digit in the number to round.**Example**: the number 563 would be rounded to 500, because the leading digit is worth 500.Chapter 3

**Division:**

We can use fact families for our division facts.

If we know 9 x 10 = 90 than 90/10 = 9

The numbers work together.

## Chapter 10

We can add money and subtract money. We can use number bonds to help us.

## Chapter 13 Graphing and Charting

I can read a chart and I can answer questions about the data from a chart.
